One of the oldest boats in the fleet, Melonseed Skiff #3 has been completely restored and upgraded and is offered for sale.  A “one owner” boat since 1989, she was built for the father of one of the crew who worked with us in the boat shop.  She was only used occasionally during her early years, only a handful of times again about a decade ago, and was in surprisingly good condition when we got her back again.

With a healthy dose of sentimentality included in the inspiration to restore the boat, it was an extremely rewarding  project to see her come back to life and look nearly as sweet as she did 29 years ago.  The dark green gelcoat we used on the hulls back in that era was rich with the tiniest hint of blue in the color, much livelier than the current green color.  The deck is gelcoated in the traditional “mast buff” color used in the earlier boats and is a great cosmetic match for the hull.  The hull now gleams, as you can see from the photos.

In bringing the boat up to the highest standard possible it was simply best to add new items and parts, replacing the original 1989 items.  The list of new items and upgrades for #3 is as follows:

New sail (tanbark or linen)

New mooring cover

New sprit, boom and hardware

New rigging (sheet, snotters)

New gold Mylar pinstripe on the sheerline

Upgrade to the new positive flotation system

New interior gelcoat

New seat cushions

Tiller tamer eye straps

Complete graphite and epoxy coating of the hull below the W/L

The trailer that accompanies the boat is a 1994 Karavan galvanized trailer that has had very limited use, and is perfectly serviceable for moderate duty.  If the new owner requires it to be upgraded for long distance travel we can provide that service at a modest cost, or provide one of our new trailers at the current price.

While MS # 3 is of course not the equal of a refinished 10-year-old boat, and there are minor hints of her age, she’s a classy lady ready to dance on the waters just as well as any Melonseed we’ve built.  The price of $6950 is more than reasonable for the value returned in sailing pleasures and the pride of ownership of one of the grand old gals of our well-respected fleet.
