The owner has truly enjoyed the boat for over 2 decades but feels it’s time to pass her on to a new owner. See one of his favorite memories below.
“I remember sailing my Melonseed in a former rock quarry lake near my home in northern Maryland. The boat sails with a quiet assurance that suits the place. Steep stone walls ringed the water, holding sounds close and giving the lake a sense of isolation from the surrounding world. The water was deep and clear, darkening quickly away from the edges, and the small boat felt matched to the scale of it. It was an unlikely setting for sailing, but it was the closest, most protected body of water near my home.
Like most quarries, the wind was unsteady, sliding down the quarry walls in brief, uneven gusts before disappearing altogether. Sailing was an exercise in patience and attentiveness—sheet eased, then trimmed again, the tiller rarely still for long. Progress was slow but deliberate with the Melonseed responding best to gentle handling and accepting that the breeze would never fully cooperate. The quiet between gusts made the sound of the hull and rigging more noticeable. However, when I saw the cats’ paws of a gust approaching, I’d be ready for it, the boat’s sail filling, the boom rising and leaning into the windward rail. The boat accelerates nicely and is just lovely at around 5 knots or so.
As late afternoon approached, the quarry took on a warmer character, the stone reflecting low light back across the water. The wind softened, sometimes vanishing completely, leaving the boat to drift beneath the high rock faces. Those hours felt suspended, shaped more by place than by destination. Sailing there was less about covering distance and more about inhabiting a moment—one defined by shifting air, enclosed water, and the steady presence of a well-loved classic boat
